One of our private clients instructed JCA to carry out a decay detection test at their property in Ilkley.

A survey of the trees on site was undertaken by another tree consultancy previously. Two trees, identified as T4 and T5, were both noted to have defects at the time of the survey. Due to recent bad weather at the time and passage of time, the owner requested further investigations in the form of a Sonic Decay Detection Tests.

Our consultant concluded that the tree named ‘T5’, despite the presence of a small cavity close to ground level, the results od the decay detection test indicated that this tree was relatively sound at the time. However, as the results did indicate some progressive decay, it was recommended that this tree be re-surveyed on an annual basis to re-assess whether or not its condition is still acceptable in terms of health and safety.

The test results for the other tree in question, T4, indicated that the tree was extensively decayed and may therefore fail. It was recommended that this tree be removed in the winter period.

One of our house developer clients contacted us to arrange a development survey and report at a site in Ilkley.

Prior to our consultants visit, a check was made with Bradford Metropolitan District Council and the check revealed that there were several Tree Preservation Orders which were in force on the site.

A total of 185 items of vegetation were inspected including 121 individual trees, 26 groups of trees and 38 hedges. Of the vegetation inspected, 23 trees and 2 groups were identified as retention category ‘A’, 56 trees and 8 groups as retention category ‘B’, 22 trees and 14 groups as retention category ‘C’ and 20 trees and 2 groups as retention category ‘U’.

As a general rule, the trees listed a retention category ‘A’ or retention category ‘B’ are the most valuable items of vegetation and as such the removal of these is likely to be met with resistance by the Local Planning Authority.

One of our clients instructed us to carry out an Arboricultural survey and report at their property in Ilkley which they wished to purchase.

In total, seven trees were surveyed. The property inspected was a detached two- storey dwelling and had a driveway and lawn area to the front and a rear lawn area which had a number of mature, mainly coniferous trees and a number of newly planted trees to the west side.

After a thorough site investigation, our consultant concluded that the ivy growth, which was taking place, was recommended category 1 works and should have a more detailed inspection and ongoing management. Regular inspections were advised, ideally a minimum of one very 2 years. There was also a Common Beech tree which was identified of requiring category 2 works including regular inspections of a minimum one every 2 years.

Providing that the recommendations identified as category 1 tree works were undertaken as soon as reasonably possible and that the recommendations identified as category 2 works were undertaken in the near future.

Our client instructed JCA to carry out an expert arboricultural safety survey and risk assessment of the trees at this site.

Prior to our consultants site visit, a check was made with Bradford Metropolitan District Council, and we were informed that there was an Area Tree Preservation Order (TPO) in force on this site. This meant that before any work was organised, an application form should be submitted to the Local Authority, outlining all the proposed works along with suitable justification. A waiting period of eight weeks was then required, after which time the council would either give consent to the works, refuse the works or grant a conditional consent.

In total, 11 trees and 1 group were surveyed by our consultant. Out of the trees surveyed, one tree was recommended for removal as it was noted to have early signs of Dutch Elm Disease. One tree has been recommended for removal as it looked to be a self-set ‘weed tree’ growing in an unsuitable position with its crown partially extending onto the roof of the existing potting shed and six trees were recommended for removal as the group collectively was considered extremely densely planted and the removal of these six specific items would allow the numerous more mature specimen trees to continue to grow more naturally whilst providing light and space beneath their crowns for shrub planting.

In addition to the recommendations, our consultant also stated that all trees being retained should be inspected on a regular basis in the interests of risk management.
