As part of the project JCA were instructed by an architect in Manchester to produce a tree management plan in order for their client to manage their tree stock on a recently purchased property, with the added intentions of the developing the property itself, which also required a development report.

Once a site visit had been completed, a tree management plan was created which enhanced the natural woodland and individual trees within the site, whilst removing the non-indigenous species. Thus, opening up the site for the clients to enjoy, allowing natural woodland regeneration, maintaining older tree specimens and continuing to provide valuable habitats for wildlife.

The development survey was based around the tree management plan whilst protecting the larger specimens near to the proposed property, such as an approx. 150 year old Oak tree. This allowed the client’s new development to benefit from the surrounding trees and woodland, whilst adding further amenity value.

All the reports were completed within the tight deadlines and the clients were very happy with the quality of work and the recommendations provided.

As part of an ongoing housing scheme, a former Mill in the Ribble Valley area was planned to be demolished, to make way for a modern housing solution. As part of the project JCA were contracted to complete a winter bat hibernation survey to ensure that the demolition if the existing building would not destroy a bat habitation.

JCA spent the winter of 2017 surveying the structure for hibernating bats. A survey completed in the summer of 2017 had confirmed that the structure was home to a number of species of bat roosting within the walls so it was expected that the building could be used by hibernating bats.

The team at JCA carried out winter bat hibernation surveys throughout winter 2017. The structure searched from top to bottom over this period, using endoscopic cameras and acoustic data gathered using Anabat detectors.

The survey concluded that there were no hibernating bats within the property, therefore only a licence for summer roosting bats had to be applied for.

If you think you may need a winter bat hibernation survey or any type of bat survey, please check out our page on bats for further information.

JCA were contracted to inspect a tree in Halifax that needed to be removed to provide an access road within a development. Unfortunately a tree on site could not be inspected from the ground because it was covered in thick Ivy. Our team had to seek permission to inspect the tree using a cherry picker and endoscopic cameras.

The tree was heavily covered in Ivy however JCA were able to complete the endoscopic surveys with help from a local cherry picker operator. The tree was thoroughly inspected for bat roosting potential. Luckily no potential roosts were found and the application could proceed as planned.

JCA Arboricultural and Ecological Consultants were contacted as planning permission for a new 78 plot housing development near to Doncaster that was under threat due to a habitation of Great Crested Newts.

The site was initially surveyed in 2016 and identified a medium GCN population. If the new housing development were to be completed the population of GCN were at risk from disturbance and harm as 2 hectares of terrestrial habitat would be destroyed as a result of the proposals. A mitigation licence was applied for and won for the site.

As part of the project JCA designed a dedicated mitigation strategy, first of retaining as much existing habitat as possible, but also enhancing existing habitat north of the site. This included the creation of wildflower meadows and woodland enhancement. Great Crested Newts were removed from the site using exclusion fencing and terrestrial trapping and relocated to a nearby receptor site.

As part of a housing development in Lancashire, JCA Arboricultural and Ecological Consultants were contracted to complete an ecological management and enhancement plan on the site of a former mill pond. The former mill pond is undergoing conversion to develop a wetland nature area and the land owners wanted to both increase net biodiversity on site and create a nature area to be enjoyed by the local community.

Due to the unsafe nature of the former mill pond, this had to be dismantled as part of the proposed plans for the site. This led to the loss of aquatic habitat.

JCA designed and coordinated the creation of a new wetland area with three smaller ponds, which both acts as a flood control for the housing estate, but also a variety of aquatic and terrestrial habitats, more diverse than the previous mill pond.

The project is ongoing into 2020 and JCA Arboricultural and Ecological Consultants will continue to provide guidance and consultancy services until the project is complete.
