One of our property developer clients contacted us and instructed us to undertake a decay detection survey at one of their sites in Bradford. The tree in question, a sycamore, had a significant lean towards the existing construction site and many of its newly installed features, such as a dry stone wall, car park and landscaped areas. As such; our client had concerns that should the tree structurally fail, it would cause excessive damage to these features and may also be a risk to public health and safety.

Before carrying out the tests the tree was first visually inspected, both at ground level and from the top of the adjacent dry stone wall. At ground level, a large cavity was found to be present, extending approximately 40% of the circumference of the base. This cavity was found to have the onset of decay, however, the surrounding live tissue appeared to be occluding at the side of the cavity, though due to its size, it was determined that it was unlikely that the cavity will ever fully heal over.

Our consultant concluded that the trees internal heartwood had areas of severe decay and large areas of compromised and denatured wood which made the tree structurally unsound and recommended that it be removed as soon as possible!

In total, 18 items of vegetation were inspected in order to assess, and if necessary, reduce their potential risk of harm.

Out of the 18 trees, 1 tree was found to pose an unacceptable risk and was recommended for immediate removal. Four items of vegetation were recommended for some form of management, in order to allow for future detailed inspections, or for general maintenance purposes.

We carried out an arboricultural survey at a property in Bradford for a client who required a survey as part of their mortgage application. The trees surveyed included two single trees and one group of trees.

Out of the trees surveyed one tree was given a category one recommendation and one tree and the group of trees, the category 2 recommendation. Category 1 recommendations are made for structural/safety reasons and are recommended to be undertaken immediately. Category 2 works are of a cosmetic or general nature only, and usually do not require to be carried out as urgently.

The tree which was given a category one recommendation was an over-mature wild cherry which had a number of defects. Our consultant recommended that the client remove the tree to ground level and treat the stump to prevent any regrowth. Our client also asked us to arrange the tree works on their behalf. We did this by contacting some local tree surgeons and provided our client with the quotes we received. Our client then instructed us to go ahead with their contractor of choice.

A private client contacted us and requested a site visit and advice from us regarding a tree situated on the neighbouring property. The tree in question was a semi-mature cherry tree and our Managing Director and Principal Consultant, Jonathan Cocking carried out the survey.

The client informed us that the driveway on their property was a concern due to being cracked in quite a few places, quite close to their neighbour’s cherry tree, which presented a stepped area and was causing a considerable risk to users of the driveway. To fix the crack, our client wanted to resurface the drive and had contacted several driveway specialists to quote, none of whom were willing to carry out the work until the tree situation was sorted.

Jonathan concluded that if the drive was to be repaired, the roots from the tree need to be controlled either by barrier or by removing a tree and the decision was left with the owner of the property and the neighbouring property.
